Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), a Dutch artist, is one of the abstract painting founders. He is notable for his pictures with combinations of red, blue, yellow and white rectangles framed with black lines. P. Mondrian advocated a non-figurative art, when the artist refuses to depict real objects, but creates exclusively abstract compositions. There the difference between horizontal and vertical lines, the presence or absence of color symbolizes the balance of differently directed forces supporting harmony in the universe.
In the Post-Mondrian Tarot deck, Piet Mondrian’s rectangular compositions are intricately intertwined with images of flowers, people and other geometric figures. The characters’ faces are presented schematic and simplified. This is done deliberately so that the viewer’s attention is not focused on individual details of the picture.
The suits of the deck differ from each other in a special combination of linear and figured images. With all the avant-garde nature of the deck, an attentive viewer can notice some symbolic objects from the classic Waite Tarot, for example, a lantern in the Hermit’s hands or a pendant shaped as a lightning on the “Tower” card.
